Clients frequently come to me wanting help with their job application forms and they particularly want support with their supporting statement.
Simple steps to help you write your supporting statement.
- Plan ahead to ensure you complete your application form well before the closing date.
- Some jobs close early if sufficient applications have been received.
- Before you begin your application read the advertisement, job description and person specification and other guidelines thoroughly.
- Check if there is a word count. If so, plan accordingly.
- Contact the organisation to discuss any questions you may have about the role or the application process.
- Answer all the questions on the application form and address all the selection criteria with examples from your current or previous work.
- When describing your responsibilities and/or achievements in your current and past roles, bear in mind the skills the employer is seeking for in the role for which you are applying.
- You may want to prepare your supporting statement in a word document.
- Relate your experience to the requirements from the person specification.
- Demonstrate your interest, passion and enthusiasm for the role.
- Give relevant examples and think about your past achievements.
- Ensure there are no spelling or grammatical mistakes.
- Get a friend or family member to read it and critique it too before you submit it.
- Keep copies of your applications for future reference.

"I found Mr Alistair Stirling after receiving some disheartening feedback about a draft application for a job. He worked with me providing feedback and tips on how I could improve it, asking me the right questions and encouraging me to overcome self-limiting beliefs and to showcase my skills, experience and knowledge in the best possible light. Writing job applications is an skill in itself but Alastair is a great career coach. I recommend him 100%."
