In December 2019 the government announced new funding for staffing in the NHS. It said that all new and continuing nursing, midwifery students and many allied health students on pre-registration courses at English universities will receive a £5000 maintenance grant each year if they are eligible. They will not need to pay back.
This comes as part of the government’s manifesto commitment to increase nurse numbers by 50,000 by 2025. The funding will be provided on top of existing support, including student loans
The Minister for Public Health Jo Churchill recently said:
“From paramedics to physiotherapists, radiographers to speech and language therapists, our talented allied health professionals are the third largest workforce in the NHS and support people to live better lives.”
As the demand will grow now and in the future for the health service, more of the best and brightest people will be needed to join the NHS.
The NHS is looking for people who are passionate about caring and saving people’s lives whether you are a paramedic or diagnosing cancer as a radiographer, becoming a midwife providing expert care during labour and delivery and after birth care. The NHS is also looking for nurses to work with, adults, children and children with learning difficulties and mental health nurses.
The Department of Health and Social Care is currently running an advertising campaign to attract more people into the NHS.
They are particularly targeting the following people:
