Over 40s

Stirling Careers Consultancy works with more mature workers.  You may be considering a career change, you may have been made redundant or you may need some help to transition to a new role.

Some of the latest research and statistics show that an average person will have between 10 and 14 different jobs over their working lifetime.  This may also mean 3 to 4 career changes. You may have many reasons for thinking about a career change. You may even be unsure about what your options are. This could be because:

  • You are experiencing poor job satisfaction or financial rewards in your current role
  • You are considering a career change but do not know where to start
  • You are considering pursuing a hobby or an area of growing interest as a possible career
  • You are finding that jobs in your area are limited or declining
  • You are looking for a role that complements your personal priorities and commitments
  • You may want to work part-time or consider studying part-time
  • You have taken a career break to look after a relative and now need to return to the job market

A career change can be a viable option whether you are 20, 30, 40, 50 or 60.

Alistair Stirling, the founder of Stirling Careers Consultancy, has changed career several times during his life. He initially worked in leisure, recreation and tourism. He then moved into education and teaching. Subsequently, he managed government funded projects is currently running his own careers and training business.

At the age of 50, Alistair retrained at Canterbury Christ Church University to become a Careers Adviser.  He gained a Qualification in Careers Guidance (QCG Level 7) and went on to study an MA in Career Guidance. His dissertation title was: People Over 50 Facing Redundancy.

You may want to make a slight or a radical change in your career direction.  However, it is really important that you think it all the way through.  Through changing career several times Alistair has had first-hand experience and understands how important it is to make sure you identify your options and  undertake thorough research before taking any action.

Failing to undertake thorough research is a huge mistake. Working with a professional careers adviser from Stirling Careers Consultancy can help you make informed decisions about your future career choices. We will then help you re-position yourself in the job market and help you persuade potential employers that you are the person to employ.

Career Change Case Studies

A couple of examples where our clients have successfully taken a career change

A recent client took a career break to look after an elderly relative and wanted to change career and return to the job market. We met with her and discussed her options and helped her prepare for interviews and on her third interview she was successful in gaining employment as a Customer Service Assistant.

Two months later you achieved her goal of gaining employment as an administrative role within the NHS. After passing her 6 month probationary period she called me to thank me for all my help and support and she was delighted with her new role.

Another recent client I supported, had previously worked as a Retail Manager for a large national retail outlet. She transitioned to a Human Resources role in a Barrister’s Chambers. The careers support involved helping her prepare and succeed at her interview. We then supported her through her three-month probationary period which involved helping her to identify her objectives and supporting her to achieve these goals.

She found the help and support invaluable particularly moving from the retail sector to the human resource profession within the legal profession.
